ChatGPT
The default AI assistant for freelancers. Genuinely useful for first drafts, rewrites, research summaries and awkward client emails, as long as you treat what it gives you as a starting point rather than finished work.
Features
ChatGPT has quietly become the tool most freelancers reach for first, not because it does the job for you, but because it removes the friction of starting. A blank page is expensive when you bill by the hour.
How freelancers tend to use it
- Getting a rough first draft down, then rewriting it properly, which is far quicker than composing from nothing
- Rephrasing the difficult client emails, chasing an overdue invoice or pushing back on scope creep without sounding annoyed
- Summarising long briefs, contracts and research so you can see the shape of something before committing time to it
- Sanity-checking proposals and quotes, asking what a brief has left unsaid or what you have forgotten to price in
Worth knowing
It is confidently wrong on a regular basis, and it is worst exactly where you can least afford it, on figures, dates, legal detail and anything tax related. Check anything factual before it reaches a client.
The free tier is fine for occasional work, and the paid tier is worth it once you are using it most days. Be careful what you paste into it. Client work is often covered by a confidentiality clause, and pasting a full brief into a third party tool can quietly breach it.
The writing has a recognisable flavour, so anything published under your own name needs enough rewriting to sound like you.
Who it suits
Best if your bottleneck is starting and drafting rather than knowing what to say. It is an accelerator for work you could already do yourself, and a poor substitute for expertise you do not have.
