Features
DigitalOcean is a cloud hosting provider built around simplicity. Instead of the hundreds of services you face on AWS or Google Cloud, you get a short list of building blocks: virtual servers (which it calls Droplets), managed databases, object storage and a hosted app platform. For a freelance developer or agency of one, that is usually everything a client project needs, and nothing it does not.

Why freelancers use it
Predictable bills. Each Droplet has a fixed monthly price. You can tell a client exactly what their hosting will cost before you build anything, which is much harder on AWS, where data transfer and a dozen small line items add up in ways that are difficult to quote.
One server per client. Spinning up a separate Droplet for each client keeps their sites isolated. One client's traffic spike or plugin compromise does not take another client down, and when a contract ends you can hand over or delete one server cleanly.
Hosting close to UK users. The London data centre keeps response times low for UK audiences and keeps the data in the UK, which some clients will ask about.
Works with the tools you already use. Server management panels such as Laravel Forge, Ploi and RunCloud connect to DigitalOcean directly, so you can provision and deploy without ever logging into a server by hand.
What it costs in practice
- A small brochure or WordPress site runs happily on a basic Droplet at the bottom of the price list.
- A busier site or web app typically moves up a tier or two, and you can resize a Droplet in place as it grows.
- Managed databases cost more than running the database on the Droplet yourself, but take backups, updates and failover off your plate.
- Backups are an optional extra charged as a percentage of the Droplet price. Turn them on for anything a client is paying for.
Prices are in dollars, so your sterling cost moves with the exchange rate. Build a margin into what you charge rather than passing the bill on at cost.
Charging clients for hosting
There are two common ways to handle it:
- The client owns the account. They sign up, add their own card, and invite you as a team member. Clean for handover, and the bill is never yours.
- You host and re-bill. You run the servers on your own account and charge a monthly hosting and maintenance fee. This builds recurring income, which matters a lot when project work is lumpy, and our guide to diversifying income streams covers why that matters. It also makes you responsible for uptime, security updates and backups.
If you go with the second option, put it in writing, including what happens to the site if the client leaves. Our guide to negotiating freelance rates and contracts covers how to price and agree it. The hosting fee is income like any other, so it belongs in your records, and managing your freelance finances and taxes explains how to keep on top of it.
Who it suits, and who it does not
It suits freelance developers comfortable on a Linux server, or happy to use a management panel on top of one. It is a strong fit for hosting several small client sites, side projects and anything you deploy from Git.
It suits you less if you build sites but never want to touch a server. A fully managed WordPress host costs more per site, but handles updates and security for you, and that time saving can be worth more than the hosting saving.
Frequently asked questions
Is DigitalOcean good for hosting client websites? Yes, especially for developers. Fixed monthly pricing makes it easy to quote, and separate servers per client keep projects isolated.
Does DigitalOcean have UK servers? Yes, it has a London data centre, so you can host UK client sites in the UK.
Do I pay VAT on DigitalOcean in the UK? UK customers are charged VAT on top of the dollar price. If your company is VAT registered, add your VAT number to the account and speak to your accountant about how to treat it.
Is DigitalOcean cheaper than AWS? For small, steady workloads it is usually cheaper and much easier to predict. AWS becomes more competitive at large scale, or when you need services DigitalOcean does not offer.
Is there a free trial? New accounts that sign up through a referral link get free credit to use for a limited period. The current amount and time limit are shown on the sign-up page.
